Allow me a moment to dive into a topic that’s been on my mind lately—data security. We all have data, it’s time to secure it.

Why Data Security Matters
#

Ever had one of those moments where you realize your data could have been better protected? That’s exactly what happened to me the other day. I was going through some old files and came across a bunch of sensitive documents that I never thought twice about storing in plain sight.

Basic Steps for Beginners
#

  1. Use Strong Passwords: This seems obvious, but it’s amazing how many people still use simple passwords or reuse them across multiple sites.

    • I started by using a password manager like LastPass only a self-hosted version called Vaultwarden, to generate and store strong, unique passwords for each of my accounts.
  2. Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA): It adds an extra layer of security that’s surprisingly easy to set up and use.

    • For most of my important accounts, I enabled 2FA using authenticator apps like Google Authenticator or Authy.
  3. Regular Backups: Make sure you have a backup system in place, whether it’s cloud storage or an external hard drive.

    • I started backing up my critical files to a NAS (Network Attached Storage) solution then encrypting and storing the files on Google Drive.

IMPORTANT: The Golden Rule of Data Hygiene

    The 3-2-1 Method:

    • Three copies of all your data
    • Two different types of storage media (External hard drives + NAS)
    • One kept off site (S3 Storage recommended, but Google Drive or similar will work fine as long as you encrypt it)

Real-World Examples
#

Remember the Equifax breach? That was a wake-up call for many people who thought their data wasn’t at risk. It’s not just big companies; your personal data is valuable too.

Moving Forward
#

So, what can you do today? Start by setting up strong passwords and 2FA on all your important accounts. And don’t forget to back everything up regularly.

In the end, it’s about being proactive and making small changes that can make a big difference.
